Plant City business tax basics
Plant City asks new businesses to verify zoning first, then submit the Business Tax Application by drop box upload, fax or in person at 302 W. Reynolds Street. Receipts are due before October 1 and expire September 30; businesses opening after April 1 pay for a half year. Hillsborough County also requires its own Business Tax Receipt for anyone doing business in the county, so a Plant City business holds both.
One rule stands out. Contractors, exterminators and landscapers (including lawn maintenance) who don't keep a permanent business or branch office in Plant City don't need a City receipt to work there.
The application also makes clear that the receipt is only a tax. It doesn't confirm that a use meets building or zoning codes, so zoning, fire marshal and other rules still apply.
The Business Tax Office takes cash, checks, money orders and Visa, MasterCard or Discover. Transfers use the same application, and the form asks for employee counts and similar details that set the tax.
Plant City trades
- Pest control Out-of-town exterminators don't need a Plant City receipt, but every pest company needs its FDACS license. Lead with it.
- Landscaping Lawn crews based elsewhere skip the City receipt. If your yard is in Plant City, you'll need one.
- Roofing Contractors without an office in the city skip the receipt, but state or Hillsborough licensing still applies. Show your number.
- Auto repair Repair shops need FDACS registration, and a Plant City shop needs the City receipt and correct zoning.
- Tree service Florida law limits local permits for removing a dangerous tree on residential property when an arborist documents the risk. Explain how you handle that paperwork.
