Opening a shop? Commercial locations need a building permit, addressing and zoning approval from the Customer Service Center at 20 Bridge Street, 843-706-4500, and a certificate of occupancy comes once a building permit is finished. Changing or adding a sign needs a sign permit first. Working from home takes a Home Occupation Application, also signed by the landowner or lease agent.
Bring copies of every state license your work requires: SC Labor Licensing Regulation for construction trades, a state retail license if you sell inventory, and food safety permits if you prepare food. Corporations and partnerships also need a federal tax ID; sole proprietors may use a Social Security number.
Apply through the town's online portal. After review you get an invoice, payable by cash, check, money order or card, and the license is issued once every approval is in. For 2026-2027, Class 1 started at $50 for the first $2,000, a business located outside town paid double, and renewals were due April 30, 2026.
