Beaufort County, South Carolina

Hilton Head Island websites for Beaufort County pros

Hilton Head Island charges a $10 application fee, and contractors' business names must match their state license.

A $10 start

Hilton Head Island is in Beaufort County, and every business working in the town, home businesses and property rentals included, needs a business license. Apply online or with the PDF form by mail, email or in person. Revenue Services is at 1 Town Center Court, 843-341-4677, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For a location inside town limits, staff coordinate reviews: a 911 addressing technician checks the address, Community Development reviews zoning under the Land Management Ordinance, and businesses that aren't home-based get a fire inspection. Check zoning before signing a lease at 843-341-4757. Reviews can take up to 10 business days.

All contractors, including subcontractors, specialty contractors and handymen, attach their SC LLR license, and the business name, including any DBA, must match it. Landscapers installing irrigation need the town's Irrigation Trade Certificate first. Retail sales and rentals need an SC retail license.

New businesses pay a $10 nonrefundable application fee, then a tax on projected first-year revenue, prorated by opening month and paid when the business opens. After approval the payment form arrives by email and is due within 10 business days. Renewals are due April 30, based on last year's federal return.
