Pay before you open
Fort Mill is in York County. Every person or business working within town limits needs a Town of Fort Mill business license, priced on business activity and gross receipts, and the fees are due before you start operating.
To apply or renew, fill out the town's application and email it to the business license staff at [email protected], or call 803-547-2034. Applications are reviewed in the order received. In-person applications are never processed the same day and can take 5 to 7 business days, so book an appointment ahead if you want help at Town Hall, 205 N. White Street, open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
Rates come from the town's adopted fee schedule, printed as Appendix A on page 11 of the business license ordinance updated in 2024. For 2026-2027, Class 1 started at $25 for the first $2,000, then $1.00 per $1,000 up to $1 million, with lower rates on higher revenue. Businesses located outside town paid double.
The license year runs May 1 through April 30, and renewals are due by April 30. Starting May 1, a 5% penalty is added for each month or part of a month until paid in full. Renew through the state's Local Business License Renewal Center, which also has a calculator for the amount due.
