Mount Pleasant is in Charleston County, and its Business License Division handles both business licenses and the hospitality tax. Every person or entity doing business, or planning to, needs a license priced by business activity and gross receipts. Fees are due before you start operating and then every year on April 30.
Applications go through OPAL, the Online Permitting & Licensing portal. Register first; the email you use must match one already on file for the business, or you won't see its license details. From the I Want To menu, choose Start an Application, then Business License, pick the license type and follow the prompts. Status updates go to the business's email as the application moves through approval.
Renewals happen in OPAL too: open Account Summary, choose Licenses, and pick Renew from the actions menu. Payments go through the Make a Payment box on the home page. The town also links the state's License Renewal Center and the MASC standardized application.
Fee questions go to the Business License Office at (843) 849-2786; the town says license fees fund services like police, fire and recreation. Restaurants also owe a 2% hospitality tax by the 20th of each month, collected by Charleston County. Town offices are at 100 Ann Edwards Lane.
