Berkeley County, South Carolina

Hanahan websites for Berkeley County service pros

Hanahan requires a business license even from owners of rental property, residential or commercial.

Rentals count too

Hanahan is at the southern tip of Berkeley County, beside North Charleston. Anyone working for hire in city limits, in whole or in part, needs a business license, and so does anyone who owns residential or commercial rental property there. The city follows the 2022 Model Business License Ordinance.

The Business License Office at City Hall, 1255 Yeamans Hall Road, helps with applications and with other city clearances or permits you need. The Business License Official is at (843) 576-5257; the office line is 843-576-5259. A new-business handout lays out the process, and the city's page also points owners to the South Carolina Business One Stop website and the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce for more help getting started.

New licenses and renewals can both be done online through the city's services portal, which also takes permit applications and invoices. Closing up or leaving town? File the city's Business Closure Form so you aren't billed again.

The license year runs May 1 through April 30. For 2026-2027, Class 1 started at $30 for the first $2,000, then $0.60 per $1,000 up to $1 million, with lower rates above that. Renewals were due April 30, 2026; penalties began at 5% on May 1 and reached 50% in February 2027.
