Horry County, South Carolina
North Myrtle Beach websites for Grand Strand service pros
North Myrtle Beach charges out-of-town businesses double the in-town rate on income earned in the city.
An excise tax, explained
Inside this Horry County city, anyone doing business in the city pays an annual license fee, home businesses included. The city calls the license an excise tax on the privilege of doing business, measured by gross income, under state code section 5-7-30; it isn't a sales, property or income tax.
In-town businesses pay on 100% of the gross income at their location. Out-of-town businesses that come into the city to work pay on income earned in the city, but at double the in-town rate. The state renewal center's 2026-2027 table put the lowest class at a $50 base covering $2,000 of income, then $1.75 for each added $1,000 until revenue hits $1 million.
Request an application by mail or fax, or pick one up at the Business License Office, 1018 2nd Avenue S, 843-280-5585, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Staff help work out your classification and fee. Rental licenses go through the city's application portal, and a status search shows which businesses hold city licenses.
Licenses run May 1 to April 30. Renewals are mailed in mid-March and due back by April 30; late payers then owe 5% starting May 1, and the charge climbs monthly. Refusing to buy a license brings a Uniform Summons to Municipal Court.
