Florence County, South Carolina

Florence websites for Florence County service pros

Florence wants a zoning certificate and a passed fire inspection before you can even apply for a business license.

Zoning and fire first

Florence is the Florence County seat, and anyone doing business inside city limits needs a city business license. Opening a place of business starts with Planning, Research and Development in the Development Services Office, Room 200, 324 West Evans Street (843-665-2047), where you get a Municipal Zoning Compliance Certification.

Planning then sets up a Fire Marshal inspection to check the building against fire safety rules. A fire inspector calls to schedule it, and it usually takes no more than two days to schedule and finish. Electrical, mechanical, plumbing or structural changes go through Licensing & Permitting on the 4th floor (843-665-3151).

Once cleared, submit the completed application with copies of the zoning certification and the Fire Marshal Inspection Order. Email them to [email protected], mail them to Licensing & Permitting at 324 West Evans Street, or hand deliver them to the 4th floor. Pay by cash, card or check made out to the City of Florence.

Renewals for everyone doing business in city limits were due April 30, 2026, and can be done online. Unpaid tax draws a 10% penalty for each month or part of a month after the due date. Questions: (843) 665-3173.
