Sumter charges a $50 nonrefundable clearance form fee for every new business.
One office, city and county
Sumter is the Sumter County seat, and one Business License Department serves both the city and the county; every operating business in either needs a license. Apply in person at Liberty Center, 12 W. Liberty Street, Suite 8, (803) 774-1601.
New businesses complete an application plus the right clearance form: home-based, commercial or food truck. Planning sends it to Zoning for approval. Commercial businesses also need Building Inspections and Fire Department approval, and bars need Police approval. The $50 clearance fee also applies to new owners, new addresses and added activities, and cards carry a 3.4% plus $0.30 surcharge.
Staff copy every owner's driver's license, and a home business owner's ID should match the address. If you rent the home, the owner signs a notarized permission letter before the process starts. Booth renters, seasonal events and peddlers skip the clearance form. You're called back to buy the license once the clearance form clears.
The city posts a business license estimator, but its figures may not match your final cost, and submitting an application doesn't guarantee a license. A move or ownership change must be reported within 10 days. Renewals are mailed in February and due April 30, with 5% added May 1 and 5% more each month after.
