New Smyrna Beach steps
New Smyrna Beach takes Business Tax Receipt applications online through its Citizen Self Service site. Staff review each one for accuracy, which can take one to two weeks, then send it to zoning review against the City's land development rules, the Florida Building Code and fire codes.
After zoning signs off, you schedule an inspection of the business location, and a passing inspection is required before the receipt is issued. If you rent your location, a Property Owner Affidavit goes in with the application. Need a sign? The City requires a building permit for it, applied for by a licensed sign contractor.
Volusia County repealed its county receipt countywide effective January 1, 2024, so the City receipt is the only local one. On the permit side, contractors register in the same self-service system, and permits expire if work doesn't start within 180 days.
NSB trades
- Handyman The City asks contractors, subcontractors and handymen for proof of general liability and workers' comp or an exemption. Mention your coverage on your site.
- Auto repair New Smyrna's application asks repair shops for an employee count, and Florida requires FDACS registration. Show your registration number.
- Plumbing Even when no building permit is needed, plumbing work needs its own plumbing permit here. Say you pull it.
- Electrical Electrical work also needs a separate electrical permit in the City. Put your state license number up front.
