Gwinnett County, Georgia

Suwanee websites for Gwinnett home-service pros

Suwanee bases its business tax on last year's gross receipts and caps it at $20,000. New businesses need a Gwinnett County fire certificate of occupancy first.

Capped at $20,000

Suwanee is a Gwinnett County city, and every business in it applies each year for an occupational tax certificate. The city stresses that the only way to get or renew one is through the City of Suwanee. Applications are online and at City Hall, 330 Town Center Avenue.

New businesses, and those changing name, owner or location, need a new certificate of occupancy before occupying the space or getting the license. You request it online from the Gwinnett County Fire Marshal, which usually takes about a week, then show it to the city for its own inspections. The license itself takes about five business days.

The tax uses the prior year's gross receipts and your business class's rate, with a $20,000 maximum. Architects, doctors, engineers and some other licensed professionals can pay a flat $400 instead. Existing holders hear from the city in early December; paperwork is due in mid-February and payment by March 31.

Because of Georgia's 2011 immigration law (HB 87), new applicants and renewals both file the affidavits and verifiable ID listed in the forms. Banks use the state's PT440 form instead. Questions go to the Business Services Department at [email protected] or 470-350-1209.
