Anderson is the Anderson County seat, and its ordinance requires a license from anyone running a business in the city and from outside businesses that work there. The Business License Office is in the Municipal Business Center, 601 S. Main Street, (864) 231-2213.

A resident business, one with a fixed place in the city that pays city property taxes, first gets an occupancy permit from Building Inspection at the same address, (864) 231-2217. Home-based businesses need a home occupancy permit. With permits in hand, you get the license before doing any business. Nonresident businesses apply at the Business License Office before starting work.

Fees follow the ordinance's classification, applied to gross revenue. Residents pay on total revenue wherever it was earned, minus license fees paid to other cities for work there. A new resident business estimates receipts from opening through December 31. Nonresidents pay on revenue or contracts in the city, and their fees aren't prorated.

The license year runs May 1 to April 30, though out-of-town contractors may finish licensed jobs that run past December 31. The application asks for your contractor license number and should be mailed or faxed to (864) 222-6683.
