A return, then an invoice

To operate inside Americus city limits you need a valid business license, which you get by filing an annual occupational tax return and paying the business and occupational taxes due. The Finance Department mails renewal returns each January 15, and they're due back by January 31.

Once the city processes returns, it mails invoices, and payment is due March 15. Unpaid invoices after that are delinquent with penalties and interest, and late renewals carry a $50 fee. The Tax and License office is at the Customer Service Center, 217 W. Forsyth Street.

The Sumter County development authority notes that businesses applying in Americus also need a certificate of occupancy from the city fire marshal's office, a U.S. citizen or qualified alien affidavit, and Georgia sales and use tax registration. It also says unincorporated Sumter County doesn't currently require a business license.
