Buford websites for north Gwinnett trades

Buford publishes its formula: last year's gross receipts times your class rate, plus $25, capped at $20,000. Online payments aren't accepted.

Receipts times rate, plus $25

Buford is a Gwinnett County city that also reaches into Hall County, and its new-business checklist gives separate inspection steps for each county. Owners first confirm the address is inside Buford city limits. Forms are online and at City Hall, 2300 Buford Highway, and the city warns against outside websites: certificates come only from Buford itself.

The city publishes its formula plainly. Take last year's gross receipts, multiply by your class rate, which runs from 0.00065 to 0.00130, and add $25. A single company never owes more than $20,000. Architects, doctors, engineers and some other licensed professionals can choose a flat $25 instead. Banks file the state's PT440. For now, payments can't be made online.

A new owner, name or address means a new certificate of occupancy. On the Gwinnett side, you schedule a Fire Marshal inspection and file an online request; restaurants also book a state health inspection. Bring a federal tax ID or Social Security number, the status affidavit with a secure ID, and a private employer affidavit, since Buford issues nothing without one. Every business must also have a dumpster with the city.

Current holders hear from the city in early January. Renewal paperwork goes back by February 15, and payment is due March 31.
