Running a trade in Avon Park
Avon Park issues its own business tax receipt. You can apply through the City's online portal or with a paper application at City Hall, 110 E Main St. Even businesses that qualify for an exemption still have to apply, with proof such as a DD-214.
Highlands County repealed its business tax on July 24, 2006. The City's page still says some businesses may need a Highlands County receipt, so confirm with the county Tax Collector. As far as we can find, the county no longer issues one.
Receipts run October 1 to September 30. Renewal notices go out July 1. Late renewals cost 10% in October and 5% a month after that, up to 25%. Moving to a new location needs Zoning approval first, and changes of ownership or business name must be filed within 60 days.
The City publishes fees by business type, and many trades pay little. Self-employed plumbers and electricians are listed at $11, the same as mobile auto detailers. Exterminators and mobile mechanics are $55. Check the schedule for your exact business type before you apply.
