Island business rules

Holmes Beach, on Anna Maria Island, issues receipts for the October 1 to September 30 year, and it's up to you to renew before September 30. A courtesy notice is mailed about a month ahead, but not receiving one is no excuse. Unincorporated Manatee County has no business tax receipt, so the City's is the one that counts.

Commercial businesses need a commercial receipt and a commercially zoned site. Check with the Zoning Department before leasing. Home businesses are limited to phone, mail or computer work, with no non-relative employees, no customer visits and no extra traffic.

Each application, commercial or home-based, carries a non-refundable $25 fee, which also covers transfers. On the City's fee schedule, general contractors and subcontractors pay $110.82 a year and unclassified service businesses $73.87. Operating without a receipt draws a 25% initial penalty.

If you still haven't gotten one 14 days after the City notifies you, add a $250 delinquency penalty plus court costs and collection fees. Bring a photo ID, any fictitious name or corporation affidavit, and your state license or certification.
