Doing business in Palmetto
Palmetto levies a business tax under Article II, Section 19-26 of its code on anyone with a permanent business location or branch office in the city. Unincorporated Manatee County has no business tax receipt, so the City's is the only one you need.
Applications are available at City Hall, 516 8th Avenue West, or on the City website, and all documents and fees are due when you apply. The City's FAQ says processing usually takes under 10 business days, and receipts are mailed or can be picked up.
Starting partway through the year? A new receipt obtained between April 1 and September 30 costs half the annual tax. Renewal notices go out beginning in July, and payment is due by September 30 to avoid penalties.
Selling the business takes a transfer form and a $5 fee. Moving means a new application, a location transfer form and an inspection of the new site: $40 for the inspection plus $5 for the transfer. Businesses in the Enterprise Zone may qualify for a 50% discount on the annual tax.
Trades we build for
- Fence installation Some trades need more than one tax classification at the same location. Call the City to confirm yours before launching the site.
- Plumbing Moving your shop means a new site inspection. Keep the address on your website up to date.
- Tree service Starting after April 1 halves the first year's tax. That's a good time to launch with storm cleanup pages.
- Junk removal If you're in the Enterprise Zone, you may get 50% off the annual tax. Put the savings into marketing.
