Canton websites for Cherokee County trades

Canton is Cherokee County's seat, and the line between city and county matters for your paperwork. Inside the city, Canton licenses you; outside, the county does.

City or county: know your line

Cherokee County requires a commercial occupation tax certificate for any business located in unincorporated Cherokee County, with a separate certificate for each location. Its Development Service Center is at 1130 Bluffs Parkway in Canton. Businesses inside the City of Canton get their license from the city instead.

For county certificates, the fee is $30 per owner and full-time employee, up to 200 employees and $6,000, and $15 per part-time employee. Moving into a space that was previously a business means a $50 tenant occupancy inspection after planning and zoning approval. The county notarizes the SAVE affidavit for free.

County renewals are due January 1 and past due after January 31, with a 10% penalty from February 1. Certificates aren't transferable, so a new owner needs a new one. As of January 1, 2026, the center no longer accepts cash.
