DeKalb County, Georgia
Tucker websites for DeKalb trades
Tucker processes zoning first: your Zoning Use Approval clears before the city touches the certificate of occupancy or tax certificate. Taxes are due when you apply.
Zoning first
Tucker, in DeKalb County, requires an occupational tax certificate from every for-profit business, home-based ones included; places of worship and nonprofits are exempt. New businesses go through three steps in one packet: a Zoning Use Approval, a certificate of occupancy for the business, and the tax certificate. Skipping any step can mean a citation.
The zoning approval is reviewed first. The business certificate of occupancy then involves a floor plan review and an on-site life-safety inspection. It covers your space only, so a building with three offices has three business COs. Home-based businesses skip that step.
Taxes are based on gross receipts with a profitability ratio and number of employees, and the city asks you to call for your fee. Payment is due when you submit. You'll need notarized SAVE and private employer affidavits (with your E-Verify number at 10 or more employees); City Hall notarizes free.
Certificates expire December 31. Renewals are due January 1 and delinquent after April 15, with penalties and interest. The office is at City Hall, 1975 Lakeside Parkway, Suite 350 (678-597-9040).
Non-citizens include a current work authorization or permanent resident card, copied on both sides. The certificate doesn't authorize alcohol sales, which need separate city and state licenses.
