Longwood licensing basics
Longwood collects its business tax under City Code Chapter 82, and part of the money supports the City's Economic Development Division and its Small Business Improvement Grant Program. Home-based businesses need a receipt too, and the City processes the Seminole County receipt alongside its own.
Register with Sunbiz before you apply. The State requires every business entity, and any fictitious name, to be registered, and the City wants that registration and any required license before it approves a receipt.
Applications go through SmartGov: sign up, choose Business Tax Receipt and track progress with automatic alerts. Some applications need inspections by the Fire Marshal or Building Official, which is typical when a space changes from one type of use to another. Staff will contact you to schedule.
Invoices go out by email only, starting July 1. Anything not received by September 30 is delinquent: 10% for October, then 5% a month. After 150 days from the first notice, the City can bring civil action with costs, fees and a $250 penalty.
